For the Week of July 25, 2011 UC Riverside chancellor Timothy White has announced his own budget plan, which will spare tenure-track faculty but will "lay off employees, decrease course offerings and increase class sizes to make up a $12.8 million gap between expenses and income." Two-thirds of the cost cutting is expected to come from administrative departments. UC Berkeley plans to implement a mandatory, automated timekeeping system called Kronos, as part of what it calls its “Operational Excellence” program to reorganize work. The new system will affect all employees who report time worked and leave usage, those working on grant-funded projects, and faculty who report leave usage. The "timekeeping initiative" will start with a pilot department in fall 2011 and will be fully implemented by July 2012. Meanwhile, even UC acknowledges that “mounting stress” is a problem for its employees. Earlier this month, both UC and CSU gave executives pay increases while at the same time raising student fees. Senator Leland Yee (D-San Francisco) and others are working on legislation to prevent such pay raises in the future. Tired of hearing blame for the nation’s debt aimed at public employees?
